• A Modest Proposal: "How to Fix Capitalism" November 22, 2009
"How to Fix Capitalism" is an insanely ambitious post that ranges over, well, just about everything concerned with business and all it touches. The following proposals give some hint of its deep wisdom:# Abolish patents. They have not been proven to speed progress: the evidence seems to be to the contrary. They definitely increase costs, are an ine […]

    • Radar Absorbing Turbines Prevent Aircraft Confusion November 27, 2009
Shared by Douglas sweet. The U.S. Military has recently expressed concern about Maryland offshore wind projects because radar could identify spinning turbine blades as low-flying aircraft, potentially disrupting its training missions in the area. Turns out the UK Military is blocking wind projects for similar reasons. If only there were a cool, high-tech s […]

After taking a vacation from blogging for the first time in over five years, I have more than enough to be writing about, but I thought I’d start out by posting a reply I just sent to Rick Smith of Metro Magazine who was asking about the future of the Triangle for communications, infotech and biotech and anything else than comes to mind. My answers: There is […]

    • Wind Power Could be Stored as Ice November 21, 2009
A perfect way of storing electricity generated by wind turbines has been elusive so far. Ideas like super-sized batteries, compressed air and hydroelectric storage have all been floated. One company though thinks the answer could be as simple as making ice. Calmac has come up with a storage system called IceBank that uses the energy generated at off-peak n […]

Spacewalk for SUSE?

Posted by douglasawh on July 31, 2009

Ok, what I really want is Landscape for SUSE because Spacewalk is on the complicated side (spacewalk doesn’t cost anything, so that’s what we’re doing). I’m not enamored by Fedora’s 13 month support cycle (Ubuntu’s 18-month sounds better to me). Also, on at least one of the models we currently have, suspend does not work. The real problem though is that Fedora does not recommend in-place upgrades like Ubuntu does. I’m not yet sure what that means as far as kickstart. PXE booting it’s likely to be an option, so that would mean every user would need some sort of kickstart boot media or we’d have to bring them in for upgrades. Neither of those sounds pleasant. Obviously RHEL would be a decent option, but if we aren’t willing to spend money on Landscape we aren’t going to be willing to spend money on RHEL. You might well then suggest CentOS. You should read today’s news. I suppose if they get that worked out, we might do CentOS.

So much I want to write about but no time. Software Freedom Day coming up as well as Open Everything on October 31st. I’m also reading a book on DiY Culture, which is interesting because I never really thought of DiY as a political sort of thing. Maybe I’ll get a chance to write about that at some point.

Bucket List

Posted by douglasawh on July 12, 2009

Having been to Europe and thinking about what I want to do with my life, I decided to put it in writing.

The original list

  • Go to all 50 states (I only have Vermont and Louisiana left)
  • Go to all 7 continents (Europe and North America are off the list)
  • Go to an MLS (Major League Soccer) game
  • Go to a US MNT (Men’s National Team) game
  • Go above the arctic circle
  • Contribute code to an Open Source project (I’m not a programmer, but I’d like to help out, of course)
  • eat bear (although, I am a vegetarian…so I better do this while my stomach can still digest meat…)
  • go to Siberia (I guess this would count as Asia)

I felt like that was going to be too easy, so I might as well add some more now.

Additional Items

  • Go to a World Cup
  • Go to The Olympics
  • Write and Record a song
  • See the Swedish MNT play (I’ve only seen the U-21 team)
  • See a professional Swedish fotboll side play

I have some additional goals, like learning Swedish, but that’s not really a one-time thing like I feel like the rest of these are. I’d also like six-pack abs, but if I get them it’s not over, I want to keep them. It’ll likely be years before I get all of that, so don’t expect an update any time soon. Although, I might be heading to an MLS game in Chicago this season!

So, you want a Europe recap?

Posted by douglasawh on July 5, 2009

Well, I don’t think it’s going to happen. However, you can look at the pictures (which, as of this writing, are not all published, but should be in the next couple of days).

Instead of a recap, you’ll get me looking ahead, as is often the case. My brother wants to go to the World Cup in South Africa next summer. I’d like to do this too, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to get tickets and I’m not sure what the future holds as to going back to school. As a fall back to both of those options, I spend some time tonight looking at another northern Europe trip…this time further north (than Uppsala, which was the furtherest north we got…and for those not familiar, that’s just north of Stockholm).

Right now, I’m looking at something like this:

Oslo to Trondheim

Trondheim to Åre (summer skiing, anyone?)

Åre to Umeå

Umeå to Kiruna

Kiruna to Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi to Åbo (aka Turku)

Turku to Helskinki

Now, there’s no way we can do Oslo, Turku and Helsinki justice in one day, but I did have trouble convincing Brenda there were interesting things to see in Helsinki, so maybe…

Obviously, the trip will be dependent on my travel partner. I’d be more than happy to go with Brenda again, but we’ll see what happens. Being more familiar with the country, we could definitely save some money and hassle next time. I’d like to do some hiking in the northern parts, but I almost feel like that’s a trip in-and-of itself. Maybe that’s what I should do and not try to cram in some Norway and Finland. Cutting out more of Norway and just doing Oslo might make more sense.

This is one way to save money http://www.camping.se/templates/start____320.aspx but getting a tent over there could be a hassle…at least the one I’ve got won’t fit nicely in a back pack. I suppose it could be tied on top.

I might want to invest in a GPS before going to far off the beaten path, but I do definitely need to take a closer look at http://www.visitsweden.com/sweden/Regions–Cities/Northern-Sweden/Outdoor-activities/Hiking-and-trekking/ also.

If I’m planning to go back, obviously I enjoyed myself. :) Suggestions? Thoughts on World Cup 2010 in South Africa?
